What are the drawbacks to the Reservation?

Huxley portrays the Fordian's universe's flaws readily, but alludes more obliquely to the drawbacks of the life on the reservation. Where do we see the 'savagery' and its negative results?

  1. In Brave New World, Huxley obviously points out the flaws of the Fordian Universe. The Reservation's flaws, on the other hand, are subtly hinted at. Some of the drawbacks are seen in the way that Huxley describes the brutish nature of Pope and of the women of the reservation. The people of the reservation are often violent and cant seem to use very mature and evolved forms of communication. We see both of these issues in the segment in which the native women beat Linda.

  2. On the Reservation the Indians seem to be closed minded to people who aren't like them, i.e John and Linda. Even though John was raised as a Indian, rocks are still thrown at him for just being different. Also, the elders exclude him from important Indian rituals like taking boys on a quest to find their soul animals when they are of age and the ritual that Bernard and Lenina see. The people are not only closed minded but (in comparison to London) are very primitive. They grow old, become ugly, and don't know when they will die. And because of this primitive way of life they stick to the basic forms of mindsets.

  3. Most of the drawbacks of the reservation have to do with material things. In a sense, the reservation is inferior to the fordian universe in terms that they cannot access goods such as food and clothing as easily and for granted as the fordian universe does. Also, since they remain a traditional society, they are still subject to aspects such as disorder in society, crime, unhappiness, and faulty consumerism. Also, they have less access to mass use of technology, such as helicopters. However, these 'drawbacks' save them in a certain sense, since they retain their humanity.

  4. The reservation is very similar to that of our civilization. People aren't pre-conditioned to be a certain way, and everyone is unique. This creates unpredictable events, including violence, and other things that are frowned upon in the World State
