Scarlet Letter is the story of Hester Pryne and her fall after committing adultery. The story requires close attention while reading because the plot is complex and often requires guesswork. One important thing readers must decide is their judgment of various characters. Wether or not characters deserve the punishments they receive in the book is debatable.
The most important thing to remember while reading The Scarlet Letter is the time period in which it was written. A lot of the reactions the characters in the book have are caused by their concepts of morality and justice. The society is, by our nature, primitive, but that does not prevent it from having complex and rich value. The things to watch out for are the reactions Pearl causes, and the way in which Hester is transformed.
This is a very difficult book, since there is an incredible amount of secrets that are not unveiled until near the end, so reading the beginning and being introduced to the characters is rather confusing. Also, many of the events and situations are very drawn out, and as stated previously, confusing until read, making most of the book more or less boring. However, it is satisfying due to its twisting storyline, and the unveiling of previously confusing secrets along the way to the end.
The Scarlett Letter is a classic period piece. It follows the story of a women how has moved to America from Europe. Though it is a novel written in a different time i think most women can relate to the protagonist Hester Pryne. She is a strong willed woman with values. When she is rejected by her society she is able to over come her obstacles which demonstrates strength and makes the story inspiring.
This novel definitely requires a lot of analysis and thinking. It's necessary to take it slow and be sure that you are catching everything that Hawthorne is throwing at you. Especially since it contains so much symbolism. The book can be enjoyable at points though due to it's suspenseful and mysterious tone.
The Scarlet Letter is about crime and punishment, in a very unique setting. The novel is set in a Puritanical colony, and the lead character, Hester, has committed adultery and therefore must be punished. She wears a scarlet "A" on her chest so that, everywhere she goes, people can point out her sin and ridicule and humiliate her for it. The reader must take time to consider the characters and plot in the story, and some of the language may be a barrier. While it is not one of the most fun books to read, it can be entertaining to guess "whodunnit" and to follow Hester's story.
The "Scarlett Letter" is a difficult read. Its got that Old English vocabulary and grammar. The plot of the book is pretty easy to understand just play bloody attention to the colors (black, red, pink, white, and Grey) and pay attention to the names and why they were given. Think of the book this way: Its a modern soap opera just put in the time of perhaps the 1700's-early 1800's in the East Coast.
Like Wuthering Heights the scarlett letter is written in the romantic Victorian style but it is not as difficult to read. The book is narrated by Hester Pryne who has committed adultery and is then forced to wear a scarlett letter A and is then shunned by the entire community around her. this is unjust because the entire society is hypocritical in this matter. pay very close attention to the symbolism in this book because it is everywhere and very important. overall it was a good book but i would say that i did not enjoy reading it
Scarlet Letter is the first in a series of books dealing with adultery in this corse. It also is a period piece depicting the puritanical society of 17th century colonial Boston. It unlike Great Gatsby is much more of a character and plot driven book. It also deals heavily with the concepts of justice and the psychological impact of secrets on the characters. There is also a lot of symbolism in this book. Pay attention to the names and the color motifs.
