The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald

  1. The Great Gatsby is a book you either love or hate. The writing style is simple and the plot line reasonable, the characters however are very unusual. The thing I found most difficult about reading this book is how annoying characters such as Daisy are. Its difficult to get through reading a book when ever line a character says makes you so angry. If one can get past these annoyances and look at the big picture however, the book is pretty good.

  2. This is a book based around the idea of false expectation and poor values. The reader is thrust into the lives of those living the high life, and can become too tangled in the glamour and deceit of the characters to pay attention to the character development and the overall moral. If one can view the book objectively, their understanding will be heightened. Having background knowledge of the setting helps as well.

  3. This book has very distinct characters and a very vague and slow plot line, making it a very interesting read. The characters alone make the plot and conflict, not the events. This makes it fun in a way, since it is very easy to side with one character or the other. The only aspect that makes the book difficult is the insignificance of events. When an event is introduced, it happens very suddenly, which jumbles the ideas, since the characters are usually taken out of the plot for the event to be described.

  4. The Great Gatsby masks itself as a simple book, but don't be fooled. While the plot is quite simple, the characters are very difficult to understand. Because the plot is so easy, readers are able to get close to the characters, which can actually prove to be really annoying. Daisy is an alarmingly overpowering character who makes me want to slap her in the face. As Emily said, Daisy was the reason that Great Gatsby was so hard for me to read. While Great Gatsby is worth reading, not Sparknoting, it might take a while to get past the characters in order to actually appreciate the book.

  5. The characters in the Great Gatsby are unusual because it is hard to relate to anyone other then the narrator, Nick. Gatsby is a mysterious man who you are not sure if you should trust him or question him. It is hard to read a novel when you feel disconnected from the characters or even frustrated with them at times. However i think it is worth reading because it is interesting to find out how all the characters are connected to one another.

  6. Ahh yes the Great Gatsby. This is a great book that I took great joy in reading. The book is not too long and the language is easy to understand. If you know your history of America you will know that in America in the 1920's the rich were getting richer and were just throwing their money away for the sake of having parties. This is a good thing to know when reading this book. All the characters are important to the book (mostly Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick) Just to forewarn you, Daisy is extremely annoying, and you will probably feel like wanting to hurt her by the end of the book as I felt. Things to look out for in the book are the interactions between Gatsby and Nick and why he lives where he lives.

  8. Fitzgerald is able to create a sense of authenticity of the roaring twenties and that is one of things the is so enjoyable. The plot is also run at a perfect speed and unravels quite smoothly so the reader can develop an understanding and appreciation. Your opinions of the characters might also grow rapidly, but don't allow them to get in the way, because by the end of the story, they most likely will have changed completely.

  9. I would call it the mediocre Gatsby to be completely honest. It is set in the "roaring twenties" so everything is very decadent and over the top. None of the characters are very likable with the exception of Gatsby, he was a bit more interesting than the others. However while uninteresting they were also irritating i see that i'm not alone int thinking that daisy was a complete idiot. The story is narrated by nick carroway who is very bland as a charecter but that is excuabel as he is the narrator. here we also see unreliable narration as nick does not know all of the details in these people's lives so he cannot give the full story except as how he sees it. The book was alright but a lot of people really enjoyed it and a lot of people couldn't stand it whatever your preference is of it it is fairly easy to read so you won't want to kill yourself all through it

  10. This book is easy to pick up and delve into, since the writing style is modern and simplistic. None of the characters in Gatsby are trustworthy besides Nick. You may put down the book feeling disgusted with these people, but it is still a good read.

  11. The Great Gatsby, is an enjoyable period peace, and I feel is more success full at representing the roaring 20’s then the plot of the story. It excellently displays the opulence of the 20’s and how wealth can destroy peoples life’s. How ever this attribute can be a determent if the reader dislikes period peaces. It is also more of a character driven book then plot driven which I found enjoyable.
