Frankenstein - Mary Shelley

Write a small personal review of this book in the form of advice to an incoming tenth grader . What should they know about the book? Would you recommend it? How should one approach the text?

  1. Frankenstein is a easy to read and interesting book. Most people know the movie version story of Frankenstein, but this book sets the story strait. The book is in a gothic style of writing and contains both drama, horror, mystery, and tragedy. While reading Frankenstein its important to pay attention to the complete transformation of both the monster and Dr Frankenstein.

  2. Because of the way Shelly introduces and uses the monster in the story, it is difficult not to feel pathos and understanding towards him. It is a fantastic storyline, since the way it is in a frame narrative helps bring about the readers understanding of the characters and their situations. However, due to the writing style, it is almost too flowery with the vocabulary and speeches; certain parts in the book will lose the reader due to their being so eccentrically voiced.

  3. Frankenstein is a book that is jammed with unnecessary words. It is good to develop a way of retaining the meaning without sacrificing it to the absurd amounts of words. There is a great point behind the book that is important to keep in the back of you head when discussing it. The text is best read when one has a lot of time, and is not pressured by other things. Reading it a little bit at a time will not let you get the most out of the book.

  4. Frankenstein is a novel that makes you question beliefs. It is a good novel to read in our time because we are much closer to cloning people. Creating the monster in Frankenstein has a negative affect so the issue of cloning as positive thing can be challenged. There are two different narrators in Frankenstein, the monster and Frankenstein. I think this enables the reader to view both side of the characters story to gain a better understanding of them.

  5. Frankenstein is best understood when taken slow. This is because of the differences between the novel, by Mary Shelley, and the stereotypical monster that we all have imprinted in our heads. The book is completely different than the movie that we are all familiar with, and some people might have trouble understanding the gothic language used. Frankenstein can either be fast and easy, or take a bit more time to read, depending very much on the reader's familiarness and fondness of gothic dramas. It is best to read twice, once so you can get used tot he flowery and confusing language, and a second time to actually understand the plot and characters.

  6. Although eventually fascinating, Frankenstein starts off extremely slow. It's difficult to want to keep reading the Gothic writing style when it fails to consistently keep the reader engaged. Shelly does however speed the plot up, and creates quite an interesting read. The monster of Frankenstein is such a major part of our modern popular culture, and it's amazing (and at times disturbing) to learn the history behind key component in our lives.

  7. Frankenstein is a story that has been reproduced countless times since its creation. It may be surprising to some that Frankenstein's monster is in an intelligent, pitiful creature who is wronged by society's judgemental eye. This is not quite the same as the evil green monster with bolts in his neck. In fact, the real monster in the book is Victor, not his creation. Frankenstein is written in typical Gothic form, and thus is full of feverish characters and dramatic situations

  8. I would disagree with Emily that Frankenstein was easy to read. It actually starts off very slow and is very monotonous to read until the introduction of the monster. then things begin to get interesting so bear through the first few chapters of the book. Then we have our first encounter with frame narrative (there is a lot more where this came from in the books to come) when we hear the monster's story. this is actually quite fascinating. the monster is a quite intelligent and intellectual creature with only good intentions to start out with all he really wants is a friend. however due to his hideous appearance he is rejected by society and turns to violence i won't give away any more of the story for you so now you will just have to read it

  9. This book is amazing. Despite the hard vocabulary and sometimes boring descriptions of things the book really gives you a great insight into what people think about non-human freaks. The book is long and the chapters are long, but finishing the book is really well worth it. Afterwords I guarantee that you will look at human nature in a different light. This book is very dark and morose and the narration of the Monster is a bit boring because its lasts so long. Other than that enjoy the book.

  10. Frankenstein is my favorite book that we read this year. It begins slow but quickly makes you want to read more. It is a fairly easy read but those unfamiliar with the language of the time may find it more difficult. It is a chronic misinterpreted book, but the book it’s self is about chronic misinterpretation of the monster. It is an extraordinary look into the biases of all humans, and just how affected we are by those biases
