What is Impressionism?

Give a quick definition (1-2 sentences) of Impressionism and what elements characterize impressionist art. Use your own words.

  1. Impressionism is the a "practice" in arts that focuses on what becomes immediately apparent. In visual art, Impressionistic works have visible brush strokes and a lot of movement and light. The subject matter it there, but the detail is absent.

They often panted out of doors and therefor had to paint quickly to compensate for the shifting shadows. They favored bright colors, and used a minimum of brush strokes paying little attention to detail.
